Abstract

Conflict is an inevitable societal phenomenon, as it is the central dynamics of human relationship, especially where values, disagreement, desires and perception, among others are in contestation. The incompatibility of values, interests, wants, desires and perception make conflicts unavoidable. For societies to forge ahead there is a need to relate even in the midst of conflicts. This is why conflict must be mitigated, regulated, contained, condoned and resolved. In either of these approaches to conflict resolution, judgment must, however, be based on existing evidence and information. Available evidence has shown that library remains a viable tool for information management because, it provides access to the tools required for building an inclusive society. This paper examined the roles of library in engendering documentation, access and preservation of information, capable of enhancing the pace of conflict management and resolution for peaceful coexistence in Nigeria. The approach adopted is that of critical analysis, as examples are drawn from the existing body of literature and information on library and information management in Nigeria. It was discovered that for conflict to be prevented or managed, information played a vital role. Since library is an institution that housed varieties of information, it became a viable tool in conflict resolution. The paper concluded that as an institution for creating, accumulating, organizing and disseminating information, the library does not only help in the process of conflict resolution, but also a viable tool in conflict prevention.
